Retrieval of Raindrop Size Distribution, Vertical Air Velocity and Water Vapor Attenuation Using Dual-Wavelength Doppler Radar Observations

چکیده
Two techniques for retrieving the slope and intercept parameters of an assumed exponential raindrop size distribution (RSD), vertical air velocity, and attenuation by precipitation and water vapor in light stratiform rain using observations by airborne, nadir looking dual-wavelength (X-band, 3.2 crn and W-band, 3.2 rnm) radars are presented. In both techniques, the slope parameter of the RSD and the vertical air velocity are retrieved using only the mean Doppler velocities at the two wavelengths. In the first method, the intercept of the RSD is estimated from the observed reflectivity at the longer wavelength assuming no attenuation at that wavelength. The attenuation of the shorter wavelength radiation by precipitation and water vapor are retrieved using the observed reflectivity at the shorter wavelength. In the second technique, it is assumed that the longer wavelength suffers attenuation only in the melting band. Then, assuming a distribution of water vapor, the melting band attenuation at both wavelengths and the rain attenuation at the shorter wavelength are retrieved. Results of the retrievals are discussed and several physically meaningful results are presented.

Dual-Polarization Spectral Analysis for Retrieval of Effective Raindrop Shapes
Dual-polarization radar observations of precipitation depend on size–shape relations of raindrops. There are several studies presented in literature dedicated to the investigation of this relation. In this work a new approach of investigating raindrop size–shape relation on short time and spatial scales from radar observations is presented. The presented method is based on the use of dual-polar...
متن کاملNonparametric Estimation of Raindrop Size Distributions from Dual-Polarization Radar Spectral Observations
This paper presents a method to retrieve raindrop size distributions (DSD) from slant profile dualpolarization Doppler spectra observations. It is shown that using radar measurements taken at a high elevation angle raindrop size distributions can be retrieved without making an assumption on the form of a DSD. In this paper it is shown that drop size distributions can be retrieved from Doppler p...
متن کاملCirrus Microphysical Properties and Air Motion Statistics Using Cloud Radar Doppler Moments. Part I: Algorithm Description
The first three moments of the millimeter-wavelength radar Doppler spectrum provide valuable information regarding both cloud properties and air motion. An algorithm using these Doppler radar moments is developed to retrieve cirrus microphysical properties and the mean air vertical motion and their errors. The observed Doppler spectrum results from the convolution of a quiet-air radar reflectiv...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE A Combined Wind Profiler and Polarimetric Weather Radar Method for the Investigation of Precipitation and Vertical Velocities
A method is presented by which combined S-band polarimetric weather radar and UHF wind profiler observations of precipitation can be used to extract the properties of liquid phase hydrometeors and the vertical velocity of the air through which they are falling. Doppler spectra, which contain the air motion and/or fall speed of hydrometeors, are estimated using the vertically pointing wind profi...
متن کاملWater vapor estimates using simultaneous dual‐wavelength radar observations
[1] A technique for the estimation of humidity in the lower troposphere using simultaneous dual‐wavelength radar observations is proposed and tested. The method compares the reflectivity from clouds and precipitation of a non‐attenuated wavelength (S‐band, 10 cm) and an attenuated wavelength (Ka‐band, 8 mm) to compute the clear‐air gaseous attenuation at the attenuated wavelength. These estimat...
